Yisa AKINBOLAJI
Summer Parade (2012) • Mixed-media on board • H20” by W30”
Contemporary African-Canadian Visual Artist, Yisa Akinbolaji from Lagos, Nigeria - now lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
My art is inspired by my experiences and imagination. As a painter I do not just paint; I like to create using paint. Once I start creating, one element of my composition leads to another. The freedom I experience through my freehand form creation and colour medley is where the fun of my abstract or semi-abstract work begins. In my own technique, I use layers upon layers of paint and mixed-media with paint-resistant substance in between to reveal the hidden colours and forms that lie beneath the topmost layers of my paint. With this process, I engage the viewers in the artistic process and discourse relating to each work, as my professional ambition has always been to contribute to two-dimensional art form by developing my own recognizable painting technique. Through the development of my work, I’m able to fuse my Western and African art education and the richly versatile international traditions that I have experienced. In some ways, my art practice emphasizes the character of my visual narratives, my experience and my imagination in a personal and unique way.
